Alta
is a small community located in Teton County in northwestern Wyoming, near the Idaho border. As of the 2010 census, the population was 394 residents. Alta is located just six miles from Driggs, Idaho at 6,440 feet above sea level. The village of Alta is part of the popular tourist region of Jackson Hole, a picturesque valley in northwestern Wyoming. The city of Jackson is the main town of the Jackson Hole area. Wintertime skiing is the major draw to the Alta region, but other things to do include hiking, whitewater rafting, fishing, golf, horseback riding, camping, snowmobiling, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and dog sledding. Alta is also near Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Other nearby attractions include the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King and Grand Targhee ski areas. The city of Jackson offers fine dining, shopping, museums, the National Museum of Wildlife Art, the Grand Teton Music Festival and the Center for the Arts. Alta and the Jackson Hole Valley region is beautiful all throughout the year in all the different seasons.

Southeastern Idaho has a unique four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state. Occasionally, moisture-laden air from the south produces thunderstorms.
