Dayton
is located in Sheridan County in north-central Wyoming at the confluence of the Tongue and Little Tongue Rivers. As of the 2010 census, the population was 757 residents. The town of Dayton is just east of the Big Horn Mountains and Big Horn National Forest. The town was originally incorporated as an agricultural community in 1906, as the fertile land and abundant water attracted many farmers and ranchers to the region. Today, Dayton is a peaceful, relaxed community near all the recreational opportunities of the Big Horn National Forest. The national forest offers over one million acres of grassy lowlands, majestic mountains, glacially-carved valleys and beautiful lakes. Elevations range from 5,000 feet to over 13,000 feet. The Cloud Peak Wilderness Area is contained within the Big Horn National Forest, consisting of about 189,000 acres. No motorized vehicles are allowed in this area - access is either on foot or horseback only. There are over 1,500 miles of trails in the Big Horn National Forest, 32 campgrounds, 14 picnic areas, 7 lodges, several reservoirs and miles and miles of sparkling streams. Activities include hiking, fly-fishing, rafting, backpacking, horseback riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling, skiing, scenic drives and unparallel photographic opportunities.

Dayton Weather & Climate

Southwest Montana is a mountainous area at between the 4,000 - 7,000 foot elevation, and almost exactly halfway between the equator and the north pole. Due to the elevation, the climate is sub-arctic, with cold, sometimes bitterly cold winters, and warm, but brief summers. During summer, the temperature rarely exceeds 78 degrees F., with an average low of 41 degrees F. Summer thunderstorms are common. Spring and autumn are cool days and cold nights, although fall generally has plenty of sunshine. Winters in the higher elevations can be very cold with nighttime lows dropping below zero most nights. Precipitation is highly variable and ranges from 15 to 80 inches in the southwest portions of Yellowstone National Park. Snow is actually possible in any month of the year, with an average of 150 inches at Yellowstone Lake, to twice that amount in the higher elevations.
