Yellowstone-National-Park was America's first national park, established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. It's located primarily in the northwest portion of the state of Wyoming, but parts of it also extend into Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3,468 square miles and is especially well-known for its' geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park. The park is comprised of many different ecosystems, sub-alpine forest, lakes, canyons, rivers, mountains and waterfalls. Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the United States, and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest super volcano on the North American continent. Amazingly, half of the world's geothermal features are located in Yellowstone National Park. Native Americans lived in the Yellowstone Region for thousands of years, and aside from a few visits from early "mountain men," it wasn't fully explored until the late 1860s. The U.S. Army was first commissioned to oversee the park until administration of it was transferred to the National Park Service in 1917. You can drive the grand loop road and see the park's main attractions by vehicle, or there are thousands of miles of trails for day hikes and backpacking. The park consists of over two million acres and wildlife that ranges from bison, moose, elk, pronghorn, bear, the gray wolf and 322 species of birds. There are 9 visitor centers in the park and 12 campgrounds. Other things to do include horseback riding, fishing, boating, biking, and guided tours. Be aware that if you're visiting between October and April, most park roads are closed due to snow and ice.

Yellowstone National Park Weather & Climate

The upper corner of southeastern Idaho has a unique four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho, although the area is not in the mountains. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state.
