Lander
is a city in Fremont County in central Wyoming along the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,487. Lander is just south of the Wind River Indian Reservation on the east side of the Wind River Mountain Range. It's known as a tourism spot with several dude ranches located nearly. The town of Lander was incorporated in 1890 and in 1906 it became the westward terminus of the "Cowboy Line" of the Chicago and North Western Railway. Originally, the rail line was intended to continue to Coos Bay, Oregon or Eureka, California as part of the Transcontinental Railroad. However, it never materialized, and this is how the town slogan came to be: "where the rails end and the trails begin." The town of Lander has the distinction of being where the first paid rodeo took place. The rodeo continues in the town today in combination with a raucous Fourth of July celebration. Lander is just seven miles from Sinks Canyon State Park, where you can witness the mystery of a river that disappears into the side of the mountain. Other nearby recreational sites include Shoshone National Forest, the Wind River Mountains and Red Desert. Activities include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, skiing, camping, wildlife viewing, scenic drives and so much more. Lander also has cultural opportunities, including a Western Gear Art Show at Lander Art Center, the annual Riverfest art show in City Park, and Missoula Childrens Theater for the kids.

Lander Weather & Climate
Central Wyoming has a semi-arid climate with long, cold winters and hot, dry summers. Spring and autumn are short and mild. This region sits at an elevation of 5,200 feet. This means that temperatures plummet at night - even on hot summer days. Snowfall is heavy during the winter, and falls from October through April. It may even snow in May. Rain is heaviest in spring and early summer - but even then, it's rarely high. Generally, the state of Wyoming is one of the driest and windiest places in the United States. Thunderstorms are possible, but are most common in the southeastern plains. Winters are cold - sometimes extremely so, interspersed with milder periods. Chinook winds provide warmer than normal temperatures in some locations. Tornadoes are rare, and when they occur, tend to be small and brief.
