Riverton
is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming. It's the largest city in the county and the largest within the historical boundaries of the Wind River Indian Reservation. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,615 residents. The city of Riverton is unique in that it is an incorporated entity of the state of Wyoming, on land ceded from the reservation in 1906. This situation often makes it subject to jurisdictional claims by the nearby Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes. The Riverton and Wind River Valley have been a special place for centuries for the American Indians, and later for the prospectors and homesteaders that followed. The town of Riverton sits at the confluence of the Big Wind and Little Wind Rivers at an elevation of 4,956 feet. A sense of history blends with an evolving town that has become a commercial and educational hub of the region. In addition, since it's sheltered by mountains to the west and north, Riverton has one of the mildest climates in the state of Wyoming. This means Riverton is perfect for year round outdoor activities, including hiking, walking and biking on the Rails to Trails trail that runs through town along the old railroad right-of-way. Other things to do include fishing, rock climbing, golf, sledding, ice skating, hot-air balloon rides, and gaming at area casinos. The town is also host to the Northern Arapaho Experience that takes place annually from June through August outside the Wind River Casino. This events allows visitors to experience the Native American heritage through song, dance and storytelling. Riverton is also home to a Farmer's Market, open every Saturday morning August to early October.

Riverton Weather & Climate
Central Wyoming has a semi-arid climate with long, cold winters and hot, dry summers. Spring and autumn are short and mild. This region sits at an elevation of 5,200 feet. This means that temperatures plummet at night - even on hot summer days. Snowfall is heavy during the winter, and falls from October through April. It may even snow in May. Rain is heaviest in spring and early summer - but even then, it's rarely high. Generally, the state of Wyoming is one of the driest and windiest places in the United States. Thunderstorms are possible, but are most common in the southeastern plains. Winters are cold - sometimes extremely so, interspersed with milder periods. Chinook winds provide warmer than normal temperatures in some locations. Tornadoes are rare, and when they occur, tend to be small and brief.
