Laramie
is located in southeastern Wyoming, west of the city of the city of Cheyenne. As of the 2010 census, the population was 30,816. Settled in the mid-1800s, Laramie was the site of a U.S. Army fort that predates the city. The ruins of the fort lie south of the city along Route 287. Today, Laramie is home to the University of Wyoming and sits in a beautiful valley between the Snowy Range and the Laramie Range. It was named one of the best cities to retire by Money Magazine in 2011. One of the biggest attractions in the city is Laramie Jubilee Days, an annual event since 1940, always held in July. The festival celebrates Wyoming Statehood Day on July 10th, but has expanded to include several days around the Fourth of July holiday. Visitors enjoy carnival rides, a parade, rodeo, live music, games, a softball tournament and lots of good food. Other attractions in Laramie include the Geological Museum at the University of Wyoming, the Laramie Plains Museum, the Wyoming Children's Museum and Nature Center and the Fine Arts Concert Hall on the University campus. There are 20 sites in Laramie listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Wyoming Territorial Prison and the Downtown Laramie Historic District. Recreational activities include fishing, hiking, mountain climbing, camping, skiing and snowmobiling. Laramie is also a center for mountain biking, with trails that meander through forests in the Laramie Range and the Snowy Range.

The southeast corner of Wyoming is a high plain situated between two mountain ranges. The elevation is about 7,000 feet. Due to the high elevation, the climate is semi-arid, with long winters and short, relatively cool summers. Temperatures in winter are cold, although there are often periods when Chinook winds, blowing down from the Rockies, bring warmer conditions. This generally happens on an average of 20 days between December and February. The greatest snowfall occurs in March and April. It averages 60 inches for the winter season, although thick snowfall rarely lasts long. Rainfall totals only about 10 inches per year. The southeastern plains have the most days of thunderstorm activity in the state, and is also the most vulnerable for tornado activity.
